The MAA presents awards and prizes at the Convocation Banquet and throughout the year to recognize clinical and academic excellence. Most MAA award decisions are made in the Undergraduate Awards Committee.

Dr. Robert Duff Barron (3T9) Memorial Scholarship — Established in 2002 by Mrs. June Barron, in memory of her late husband, and granted annually to a medical student from any year who can establish financial need, as determined by the Faculty of Medicine's Awards and Admissions Office, Office of the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education.

Class of 8T9 Award — Established by the Class of 1989 to recognize faculty members for their outstanding contribution to the undergraduate experience.

Class of 9T8 Medical Alumni Association Undergraduate Medical Student Awards – established by The Class of 1998 in 2005, and awarded annually to undergraduate students studying in the MD program in the Faculty of Medicine on the basis of financial need.

Dr. Tom Fejer Ophthalmology Award — Established in 2000 by Karen Fejer and friends, and awarded to an undergraduate or graduate medical student for having an Opthalmology review published in the University of Toronto Medical Journal. Applicants should contact the Medical Alumni Association office to apply for this award.

Dr. Kelly Gollish 5T7 Memorial Award — Presented annually to a medical student in either the third or fourth year who has demonstrated an interest in the field of Ophthalmology through clinical or research participation.

Dr. Wolf Grobin Memorial Elective Scholarship — Established in 2008 by the membership of the Canadian branch of the Israel Medical Association, in memory of the founding members of the association.  The annual award (in the amount of $400-$500) is given to a student planning to complete an elective in Israel, to assist with travel and other costs related to his/her clinical elective.  It is expected that the student will present his/her experience to the IMA upon return from the elective.  To apply, request an application form from the MAA office.

Dr. R.E. Haist (Class of 1936) Award in Physiology — Established in 1973 is awarded annually to an undergraduate medical student in recognition of high standing in the Physiology components of Structure and Function and Metabolism and Nutrition.

Dr. John Hepburn Award — Established by the estate of Dr. Ruben D. Grant (2T8) in honour of Dr. John Hepburn (2T1), a cardiologist and teacher at the U of T. This award is made on the recommendation of the Chairman of the Department of Physiology to assist in cardiovascular research.

Dr. Delbert S. Hoare Award — Presented to a graduating student who has made outstanding contributions to undergraduate medical education, or who has fostered the supportive role of the MAA with medical undergraduates of the U of T.

Dr. Mary Hollington Teaching Awards — Established from a gift made by Dr. Mary Hollington (4T4) to the MAA. One award is given to a Faculty member who has taught with distinction in the pre-clinical or basic science portion of the curriculum. The second award is presented to a teacher who has demonstrated excellence in clinical teaching in the fourth medical year.David Eberle Memorial Alumni Award — established by medical graduates of the class of 9T2. This award is presented to a staff member in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the undergraduate medical experience.

Albert and Rose Jong Medical Alumni Association Student Awards – Established from a gift from Drs. Raynard, Roberta and Winston Jong in honour of their parents. Presented annually to an incoming third-year undergraduate students studying in the Medical Doctor program of the Faculty of Medicine on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated leadership in the Chinese Canadian community.

Dr. Ruth Kurdyak Memorial Medical Alumni Association Medical student assistance award - The award, donated by Dr. Victor Kurdyak (6T0) in memory of his wife, Dr. Ruth Kurdyak (6T0), and matched by the university, will be awarded annually to students with financial need.

Dr. Ted (Class of 1932) and Maeve Lindenfield Bursary — Established in 2001, and granted annually to an undergraduate medical student based on financial need, as determined by the Faculty of Medicine's Awards and Admissions Office, Office of the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education.

The Lum Family Medical Alumni Association Undergraduate Medical Student Award — Established in 2005, from a donation by Dr. Grant Lum (9T2) in honour of his parents, Wing Bor Lum and Mui Fong Lum. The award is granted annually to a medical student who has demonstrated community leadership in philanthropy as well as academic excellence.

Bernard A. Manace (Class of 1930) Award — Established in 1974, in his memory, by his children, Kathryn and David Manace, and friends and patients. Students must apply directly to the Medical Alumni Association for this award. The award is annual, to a medical student in any year who is undertaking an elective or summer medical experience in Israel. Preference will be given to a student working in the area of immunology or allergies. Consideration is given to academic standing.

Robert P. Orange Memorial Medal and Prize — Established by classmates of the late Dr. Orange (6T5). This award is presented annually to a student in the fourth year who has demonstrated excellence in academic achievement and leadership, and a commitment to extracurricular activities with the Faculty of Medicine and the University.

MAA Proficiency Scholarships — Presented annually in recognition of general proficiency in year four of the undergraduate medical program.

The Janet K. Ross (3T8) Student Bursary — Established in 2002 by her children, Robert Ross and Susan Shone, in memory of their late mother. Granted annually to an undergraduate medical student based on financial need, as determined by the Faculty of Medicine's Awards and Admissions Office, Office of the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education.

Silver Shovel-Chute Award — Established by the medical graduating class of 5T4 and reestablished in 1973 as the Chute award in honour of Dean Chute. This award aims to recognize excellent lecturing in the clinical years of the medical school program.

Dr. L. Nelles Silverthorne Award — Established in 1975 is awarded to a medical student from any year who is undertaking an elective or summer medical experience in a remote area. Preference is given to a student working in a mission hospital. Students apply for this award on a MAA Elective Transportation Grant application in the MAA office before leaving on the elective.

Samuel J. Streight Award — Presented annually in recognition of high academic standing in Internal Medicine.

The Weber/Nimon Prize in Neurology — Created in 1999 to honour the memory of Sol and Rose Weber and Joseph and Esther Nimon by their grateful children, the late Dr. B.M. Weber (Class of 1963) and Wendy Weber, and is awarded annually at the MAA Convocation Banquet to a student in any medical year who demonstrates a special interest in Neurology.

Dr. Harry Whittaker Memorial Award — Established in 1976, is awarded to two first-year medical students and one Faculty who, during the first medical year best exemplified the personal qualities and achievements of the late Harry Whittaker in providing practical, sensitive and friendly guidance and demonstrated concern for student welfare. Winners of the awards are picked by the first-year class at the time of Medical Society elections.

Dr. Carl (Class of 1936) Witus Award in Paediatrics — Established in 1990 is awarded to a third-year student with high standing and interest in paediatrics. Recommendations will be received from the Department of Paediatrics.

Drs. Carl (Class of 1936) and Ann Witus Admission Awards — Established in 1990, are awarded to 10 first-year students in recognition of high academic standing during premedical studies.
